Area of research: Rhetoric of Reflection and Reflection on Action

The multimodal project was a culminating task showcasing my research of the rhetoric of reflection and reflection on action, drawing on my personal life experiences framed through the lens of betterment, in addition to a creative writing sample, a video podcast, a working theory of the Betterment Framework, blog postings, research, and interviews applying the Betterment Framework.

The Rhetorical Terms page of the website features key rhetorical concepts, their applications, and an interpretation. This approach connected concepts to personal experience and research, intended to reinforce learning and deepen my understanding – a key aspect of transfer of learning.

Research and Working Theoretical Framework

As part of my learning process, I often create visual working models to help conceptualize and clarify ideas. While some view the process of writing and rhetoric as abstract, I find ways to make it concrete – an approach that has led to the development of my theoretical model, Betterment Framework. Using the Betterment Framework as my foundation, the model evolved during my research on how individuals reflected on their own actions, the teachings of growth and improvement, and interviewing mothers about their interpretation and applications of betterment in their daily lives. The project served as an action research study, allowing me to test and refine the theoretical framework in practice. Through this process, the Betterment Framework naturally evolved, shaped by the insights and lived experiences of mothers and their teaching or application of betterment through parenting.

Podcasts: Rhetorical Situation

I produced a three-part podcast as a way to apply the concepts of rhetorical situation and reflection on action. This part of the project also allowed me to develop content writing, as well as develop skills in audio and video editing for a technical production.

Expanding communication through digital audio creation. The second featured artifact is a three-part podcast series also published on the Rhetrogers website. This was my first experience producing an audio podcast and using digital audio software. Through experimentation and creative play, I learned to shape the project’s structure and tone. Wanting to avoid being the direct “face” of the podcast, I integrated an AI-generated visual, audio waves, and closed captions to create a more engaging experience. This process not only enhanced my technical skills but also pushed me to expand my understanding of writing and production.

Video Production

Chronic Illness Video Project

Visual rhetoric in healthcare. The final artifact is a video project focused on chronic disease, created in my Rhetoric of Health and Medicine course. Inspired by readings and a guest presentation by Lora Arduser, this multimodal composition allowed me to experiment and play with how visual and auditory elements can communicate meaning. Purposeful use of sound, visuals, and pacing required careful planning and reflection, reinforcing the importance of rhetorical awareness in multimodal communication.
